Moldova's Parliament to vote on two new CSM members
Moldova's Parliament has approved the nominations of Lucia Popescu and Iulian Muntean to the Supreme Judicial Council (CSM), the country's top judicial body.
The decision was made by the Parliament's Legal, Appointments and Immunities Committee.
Popescu is a lawyer with a law degree and a master's degree in civil and European law. She is currently working on the project "Strengthening Transparency, Accountability and Access to the Judicial System in Moldova."
Muntean is a lawyer and former professor at several universities in Moldova, including the State University of Moldova, the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova, and the Technical University of Moldova.
The competition to select candidates for the CSM was held in three stages: the submission and admissibility of applications, the evaluation of candidates' integrity, and an interview. Six people were admitted to the third stage: Veaceslav Guțan, Aliona Corcenco, Vitalie Sîli, Iulian Muntean, Lucia Popescu, and Leonid Chirtoacă.
The CSM is a constitutional body in the Republic of Moldova that ensures the independence of the judiciary and is responsible for appointing, transferring, relocating, promoting, and disciplining judges. It is composed of 12 members. Six of them, who are not judges, are appointed by Parliament with a three-fifths vote of the deputies.
