Russia's drone attacks on Ukraine's infrastructure continue
On the night of September 7, Russian forces launched three hours of drone attacks on the south of Odessa. This is the fourth attack in the Ismail region in the last five days. One person was injured and port infrastructure, including an administrative building, was damaged.
According to the Air Forces, Russia launched over 33 Shahed drones at Ukraine, most of which targeted the Odessa region. Ukraine's air defence systems are said to have shot down 25 kamikaze drones.
Also in the night, Russian drones targeted the Sumy region, but regional authorities have not provided an assessment of the attack's consequences.
On Wednesday, September 6, debris from the drones was also found on Romanian territory. This would represent a serious violation of sovereignty, said Bucharest leader Klaus Iohannis.
According to press reports from across the Prut, Romania informed NATO allies that it had found debris from a possible drone during Wednesday's meeting of the North Atlantic Council, and allies expressed strong solidarity with Romania, according to NATO spokesperson Dylan White.
"Since last year, in response to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, NATO has significantly increased its presence in the Black Sea region," Dylan White recalls. "We continue to closely monitor the situation and remain in close contact with our ally, Romania," NATO said in the final statement.
The wave of bombings on Ukraine's port infrastructure comes at a time when Russian leader Vladimir Putin is demanding the lifting of sanctions as a precondition for the relaunch of the Black Sea Grain Initiative.
