Russia calls on Moldova to pay Gazprom debt

The Russian Foreign Ministry has called on the Moldovan authorities to "refrain from politicising practical issues of bilateral cooperation, including in the energy sector." The statement was made in response to the results of an audit of Moldovagaz's alleged debts to Gazprom.

The audit, which was commissioned by the Moldovan government, found that a large part of the debt is not owed or cannot be enforced. However, Gazprom has said that it does not recognize the results of the audit and intends to continue to defend its rights.

The Moldovan government has said that it will not pay the debt, which it describes as "non-existent." This has raised concerns about the possibility of a disruption of Russian gas supplies to Moldova.
