Moldova condemns Russian elections in occupied Ukraine

The Moldovan government has condemned the planned Russian elections in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, which are scheduled to take place on September 10.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration said that the elections are illegal and illegitimate.

"The Republic of Moldova does not recognize and condemns the organisation of the so-called ‘local and regional elections’ by Russia in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, scheduled for September 10," the statement said.

"The Kremlin's attempt to confer legitimacy on the territories of the sovereign state of Ukraine, occupied by force, are illegal and in total disagreement with the provisions of international law and international treaties to which Russia itself is a party," the statement said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated that the Republic of Moldova "firmly supports the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders."
