Moldovan government to continue to stand up to Russia
Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean on Wednesday vowed that his government would continue to resist any attempt by Russia to undermine Moldova's sovereignty, territorial integrity, or the dignity of its citizens.
"It is time for Russia to realise that Moldova is an independent state," Recean said in an interview with the Jurnal TV television station. "This is crucial. And it is time for Russia to realise that Moldova must be respected. Immediately after the start of the war, we were very clear about Moldova's position on Russia's attack on Ukraine, and how they are killing people there. And we will continue to cut off any attempt by Russia to undermine Moldova's territorial integrity, independence, and the dignity of Moldova's citizens."
Recean also dismissed Moscow's reaction to Moldova's expulsion of the head of Sputnik Moldova, the Russian state-controlled news agency.
"We should not react to hysterical reactions," he said. "We must calmly go about our business, work to grow the economy, provide salaries, and create opportunities for the business environment. The government has demonstrated throughout this period that it has the capacity to ensure peace, security, and to face all threats, of any type they have tried to undertake: with false bomb alerts to induce anxiety in society, with the financing of criminal groups that organised protests, organised destabilisation attempts, with cyber attacks. So, nothing will pass. The government will continue to ensure security in the country and, in parallel, we must focus on justice reform, economic growth, and meeting the conditions to move to the next stage in negotiations with the EU."
