Import of cars in the Republic of Moldova contributes to the increase in the volume of metal waste, economic expert
The Republic of Moldova annually imports approximately 30 thousand cars, which, after a certain period of time, can become metal waste. Thus, currently 15% of the total volume of this type of waste is used cars, said economic expert Veaceslav Ioniță.
According to him, a reason for the increase in the volume of scrap metal is also the more than 260 thousand old cars that have been abandoned.
"Annually, the Republic of Moldova imports about 30 thousand cars, which means 40 thousand tons of metal that at some point becomes metal that must be recycled, we mean cars, not about other types of equipment. Annually, cars bring us 15% of all metal waste that the Republic of Moldova has. In 2010, we have 80 thousand ghost cars that were imported into the Republic of Moldova. Currently, we have reached 260 thousand cars that do not have a provenance", said Veaceslav Ioniță.
We remind that, in 2021, the export from the Republic of Moldova of metal-bearing ores and metal waste increased 3.2 times compared to 2020 and 5.5 times compared to 2019, statistical data show. Thus, the value of exports this time reached about 87.3 million dollars, while in 2020 it was 27 million dollars.
