Moldova's Parliament approves electronic voting bill

The Moldovan Parliament on Thursday approved a bill in first reading that would introduce electronic voting in local councils.

The bill, proposed by the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), aims to increase transparency and efficiency in local decision-making.

Under the bill, each councillor would be assigned a means of authentication to the electronic voting system to cast votes on decisions. Electronic voting devices would be used during council meetings to verify quorum, cast votes, and tally the results of voting.

The bill also provides for the live broadcasting of council meetings on national public radio and television stations and on the official website of the local authority. Additionally, it is proposed that both the results of electronic voting and meeting minutes be published on the website of the public authority.

The bill will be consulted with representatives of local authorities and civil society before being put to a vote in the second reading.
