Moldova: Majority governments use parliamentary immunity to target opposition
Former Moldovan Constitutional Court President Alexandru Tănase said in an interview with Radio Moldova that the lifting of parliamentary immunity is a practice of governing majorities.
He noted that over the past three decades of independence, no parliamentary majority has lifted the immunity of its own members.
"Unfortunately, the statistics for the entire period of independence of the Republic of Moldova show that parliamentary immunities have been lifted, especially for opposition representatives, the parliamentary majority never lifts the immunity of its own members," Tănase said. "Of course, society should have convincing moments that what is happening is an ordinary activity of law enforcement agencies, but not a matter that has certain political overtones."
