Romania and Portugal to support start of EU Accession talks with Moldova by end of year

Romania and Portugal will support the start of EU accession talks with Moldova and Ukraine by the end of this year, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said in Lisbon.

Iohannis made the announcement on Saturday during a joint press conference with his Portuguese counterpart, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

"We agreed to support Moldova's efforts to address the vulnerabilities it faces as a result of the war in Ukraine, in order to support the stability and resilience of Moldova," Iohannis said. "Our dialogue also focused on the European agenda, including EU enlargement, a process of strategic importance. We stressed that we must jointly support the opening of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova by the end of this year."

The two officials also agreed to develop cooperation in the political and military fields, in the context of the increased security risks in the Black Sea region, following Russia's multiple attacks on Ukrainian ports on the Danube.
