Profile of candidates for the general local elections of November 5, 2023

Every third candidate for the position of mayor is a woman, and every fifth candidate for the position of councilor is aged between 18 and 35. The Central Electoral Commission presented information on the profile of the candidates participating in the general local elections scheduled for November 5, 2023.

According to the data provided by the Central Electoral Commission, the total number of registered candidates for the positions of mayor and local councilor is 57,396. They come from 35 political parties and one electoral bloc, and 1,174 are independent candidates.

Regarding the position of mayor, of the 3,952 candidates, 2,756 (69.7%) are men, while 1,196 (30.3%) are women. By age, the profile looks like this: 14 candidates (0.4%) are 23 years old, 682 candidates (17.3%) are between 24 and 35 years old, 1,464 candidates (37%) are between 36 and 50 of years, 1,727 candidates (43.7%) are between 51 and 70 years old, and 65 candidates (1.6%) are over 71 years old.

For the position of councilor in local councils, the age profile is: 18-35 years old – 10,592 candidates (19.8%); 36-50 years old – 18,008 candidates (33.7%); 51-70 years old - 22,696 candidates (42.5%); 71 years + - 2,148 candidates (4%).

General local elections are held in the Republic of Moldova. 898 mayors and 11,058 local councilors are to be elected for a four-year term. Elections are held in all administrative-territorial units except for the towns on the left side of the Nistru and the municipality of Bender. 2,762,125 voters are expected at the polls.
