The European Parliament calls for stricter monitoring of sanctions against Russia
The European Parliament adopted a resolution on Thursday calling for stricter EU-level monitoring of compliance with sanctions against Russia, as well as greater efforts to limit Moscow's ability to evade sanctions measures, reads a statement of the European Parliament.
In the resolution, MEPs express concern about some existing loopholes in the EU's sanctions regime against Russia. "Underlining the unprecedented nature of the EU's restrictive measures, MEPs are concerned about the lack of adequate enforcement and attempts to undermine efforts to strategically weaken Russia's economic and industrial base, as well as to hinder the country's ability to wage war ", reads the report.
According to the document, Russia, in particular, is able to circumvent oil price restrictions.
MEPs are concerned about trade in critical war goods between EU member states and the Russian Federation, as well as reports that countries such as Azerbaijan are legalizing Russian gas for export to the EU.
The MPs also noted that the EU remains one of Russia's biggest fossil fuel customers due to continued imports of pipeline gas and LNG.
In addition, MEPs want EU member states and the European Commission to extend the sanctions.
Earlier, the media reported that EU countries will start discussing proposals for the 12th package of sanctions against Russia, which will focus on banning trade in Russian diamonds.
According to Bloomberg, the proposals for the 12th EU sanctions package include restrictions on trade in goods with a total value of around 5 billion euros.
Also, the new sanctions would target more than 100 people.
