Politicians should be concerned about the low turnout of young people in the general local elections in the Republic of Moldova, experts
While 80% of the elderly go to vote, only 37.2 percent of young people voted on November 5, the day of the general local elections, claimexperts from the Institute for Development and Social Initiatives "Viitorul". According to them, it is worrying that young people are not interested in the political life of the country.
According to an analysis carried out by the experts of the "Viitorul" Institute for Development and Social Initiatives, in the Republic of Moldova, there is a tendency to decrease the attendance of citizens to vote in the general local elections, compared to the presidential or parliamentary ones. Young people are increasingly absent from elections, believes the economic policy expert of the Institute for Development and Social Initiatives "Viitorul", Veaceslav Ioniță.
"In the general local elections of November 5, there was the lowest voting participation rate of young people in the history of the Republic of Moldova. In previous years, in the general local elections, 50% of the young people who were in the country participated in the vote, in the presidential elections, approximately 70 percent of the young people voted, and in this election, only 37.2 percent of the young people participated. This fact should worry all politicians".
Veaceslav Ioniță said that on November 5 in the general local elections, approximately 1 million 148 thousand citizens voted. According to him, there were 1 million 970 thousand voters in the country, by 800 thousand fewer than are on the electoral lists. According to the preliminary information presented by the Central Electoral Commission, the turnout rate at the national level was 41.41%, while the turnout in Chisinau Municipality registered 40.96% of the total number of voters.
