Austrian president considers Vienna's decision to block the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen area as incorrect

The President of Austria, Alexander Van der Bellen, considers the Vienna Executive's decision to block the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen area this summer to be wrong. In a press conference held today in Chisinau, the official expressed hope that the federal government's decision will be reviewed.

"If the Schengen system does not work, why should we block Romania and Bulgaria? Why not allow them to join? The real question is how we could control the flow of people, who are either looking for a job or seeking asylum in one of the 27 member states. In my opinion, this has nothing to do with the Schengen issue and I hope that one day this decision will be reviewed. Today I am confident that the decision was not the right one," said the Austrian president.

We remind you that in July, Austria repeatedly blocked the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen area, emphasizing then that access to the free movement area is not a matter of party politics, but of security policy.

Currently, all member states of the European Union, except for Bulgaria, Cyprus, Ireland and Romania, are part of the Schengen area of free movement, which also includes states outside the bloc, such as Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
