Igor Grosu, meeting with his Austrian counterpart Wolfgang Sobotka: the Republic of Moldova is ready to start EU accession negotiations
The Republic of Moldova is ready to start accession negotiations to the European Union and is counting on Austria's vote in making the decision in this regard in December by the European Council. The statement was made in Vienna, Austria, by the Parliament Speaker, Igor Grosu, who is on an official visit to this country.
In Vienna, Igor Grosu had a meeting with his Austrian counterpart, Wolfgang Sobotka, President of the National Council of the Republic of Austria.
The two Parliament Speakers discussed the achievements attained by the Republic of Moldova through European integration and the reforms to be completed such as the justice reform and the deoligarization process, energy security and the strengthening of state institutions to face all the challenges, reads a press release of the Legislative.
"Being in Vienna, once again I am convinced that the Republic of Moldova has reliable friends in the countries of the European Union and good supporters of our country", said Igor Grosu.
Grosu reiterated that the Republic of Moldova is ready to start accession negotiations in the shortest possible time. "The Parliament Speaker said that our country is currently in an extensive process of self-assessment of the conformity of the national legislation with the Community acquis", reads the statement.
The officials agreed to boost collaboration within the friendship group, but also within the specialized commissions. In Vienna, Igor Grosu held discussions with the members of the Republic of Austria-Republic of Moldova Friendship Parliamentary Group, as well as with those from the Parliamentary Committee for Foreign Policy.
The head of the Chisinau Legislative appreciated the support offered by the Austrian parliamentarians to the European integration process of the Republic of Moldova by carrying out projects related to the development of infrastructure, agriculture, green energy and industry.
At the end of the visit to the Austrian Parliament, Igor Grosu said that the Republic of Moldova is counting on Austria's vote at the European Council in December in Brussels, where it will be decided to open the EU accession negotiations of the Republic of Moldova.
Igor Grosu also had a meeting with the Federal Minister for European and International Affairs, Alexander Schallenberg. The discussions focused on the latest developments in the implementation process of the nine recommendations issued by the European Commission for the Republic of Moldova.
"During the meeting, I emphasized the legislature's commitment and determination to the reform agenda, noting that we are in the middle of an extensive process of equating national and European legislation. We are also making these reforms to have resilient institutions that fight corruption, strengthen democracy and create an attractive environment for investors. In this context, I stated that we will continue to do our homework, so that we have the positive decision of the Council of Europe regarding the opening of accession negotiations by the end of this year", wrote Igor Grosu on his Facebook page.
We mention that the Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, accompanied by a parliamentary delegation, is making an official visit to the Republic of Austria, between November 21-23. On Tuesday, Igor Grosu had a meeting with Moldovan citizens settled in Austria.
