Charles Michel to visit Hungary on Monday after Viktor Orban threatened to block Ukraine's EU membership
The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, will travel to Hungary on Monday where he will have a meeting with Prime Minister Viktor Orban, in order to prepare the European Council on December 14 and 15, which will examine a possible expansion of the community block, according to digi.24.
We remind you that Viktor Orban said several times that he will use his right of veto against the granting of European aid to Ukraine, the tightening of the sanctions regime in relation to the Russian Federation and the expansion of the European Union, in order to obtain the unblocking of European funds intended for Hungary.
We remind that Hungary could benefit from 900 million euros from European funds. Also, approximately 22 billion euros of cohesion funds intended for Hungary are blocked by Brussels due to reforms requested by the European Commission.
Thus, in order to obtain these resources, the Budapest authorities will have to meet a series of conditions related to the independence of the judiciary and the fight against corruption.
