Moldova launches Campaign to end violence against women and girls
A new edition of the “16 Days of Activism to End Violence Against Women and Girls” campaign is underway in Moldova. The annual event, which runs from November 25 to December 10, aims to raise awareness of the fact that violence against women is the most widespread human rights violation in the world.
The theme of this year’s campaign is “Invest to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls.”
“This is a whole campaign of events to raise awareness of the fact that violence against women, gender-based violence, is the most widespread human rights violation in the world,” said Valentina Bodrug-Lungu, a gender expert and one of the organisers of the campaign events. “And within the framework of these annual campaigns, in different countries, including Moldova, several activities will be organised. Special attention will be paid to prevention.”
The campaign will feature two traditional events: a public debate with young people and a scientific-practical conference with the participation of students and young people organized by the State University of Moldova in partnership with the International Organization for Migration.
Over 60 young people will discuss issues related to gender-based violence and try to find optimal solutions to prevent and combat the phenomenon. One of the aspects that will be emphasized is the investment of time, energy, and money in preventing gender-based violence.
A roundtable will be held in Tiraspol on the topic of “Psychological violence in modern society,” and information sessions will be held in the Gagauz Autonomous Territorial Unit about gender-based violence.
The goal of all activities is to amplify messages about gender equality, with a focus on means of preventing gender-based violence.
The Government and Parliament of Moldova have also joined the United Nations campaign “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence” this year. In a sign of solidarity with survivors of gender-based violence, six large orange banners have been installed on the facade of the Legislative Building. The color orange symbolizes a future without violence for all girls and women. The banners carry the awareness-raising message “Choose a life without violence!”
In Moldova, the “#16 Days of Activism to End Violence Against Women and Girls” campaign is coordinated by UN Women Moldova in partnership with public authorities, international organizations, and civil society.
The goal of the #16 Days to End Gender-Based Violence is to mobilize international communities, civil society, UN agencies, government institutions, the private sector, and individuals interested in getting involved in actions to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls.
