Moldova beefs up financial control with new inspectorate

The Moldovan Government has announced a reorganisation of the Financial Inspection into the Inspectorate for State Financial Control, marking a significant step forward in enhancing financial oversight and accountability.

The newly formed inspectorate will assume a broader range of responsibilities, including budgetary supervision, anti-fraud coordination, and control over European funds.

This move reflects the government's commitment to ensuring the efficient and transparent management of public resources, both domestically and externally. According to Finance Minister Petru Rotaru, "The goal is to establish higher standards of control by fostering effective financial management and enhancing the responsibility for utilising budgetary funds. This reorganisation does not entail additional expenses from the national budget. Key aspects of this transformation include: maximising the efficiency of financial oversight, empowering the inspectorate to play a more central and effective role in the system of public financial control, and placing a strong emphasis on preventing fraud and irregularities."

The expanded mandate of the Inspectorate for State Financial Control extends to overseeing the award and execution of public procurement contracts. This additional responsibility underscores the government's determination to combat corruption and ensure value for money in public spending.
