Romania pledges 8 GW of solar by 2030
Romania has joined the International Solar Alliance (ISA), a coalition of countries committed to promoting solar energy. The country aims to install 8 GW of solar capacity by 2030, which would represent 24% of its final gross electricity consumption from renewable sources.
"Romania is committed to expanding its solar energy capacity and improving access to affordable solar electricity," said President Klaus Iohannis. "We need to cooperate globally, through alliances like this one, on financing, technology development, and capacity building."
Romania's membership in the ISA will support the country in implementing its ambitious solar energy targets. The country has already made significant progress in developing its solar sector, with nearly 97,000 prosumers having installed over 1.2 GW of grid-connected distributed energy sources by September 2023.
"Romania intends to contribute to the global value chains of solar energy and increase its competitiveness in this industry," said Iohannis. "Romanian citizens are open to and supportive of new electricity generation technologies."
Romania's commitment to solar energy is in line with the EU's Solar Energy Strategy and the Paris Agreement. The country is also working to develop its green jobs sector, with the largest green jobs training centre in Southeast Europe located in Constanța.
