Moldovan Media: Guardians of democracy, vital element of society
In a resounding affirmation of the media's pivotal role in safeguarding democracy, diplomats from the European Union (EU) and the United States (US) commended Moldovan journalists for their unwavering commitment to truth and transparency.
"Journalists are not merely purveyors of information; they are the guardians of truth, the sentinels of our democracies," Addressing the Eighth Edition of the Media Forum in Chisinau, EU Ambassador Janis Mazeiks hailed journalists as "gatekeepers of truth" and "pillars of democracy," emphasising their indispensable role in informing the public and upholding democratic principles.
Ambassador Mazeiks asserted. "Their work is the bedrock of informed decision-making and the cornerstone of a healthy society."
Echoing Ambassador Mazeiks' sentiments, US Ambassador Kent D. Logsdon underscored the transformative power of a free and independent press. "A free press educates, elucidates, discovers, and exposes," he declared. "It is the guardian of truth and the vital element of an open and informed society."
Ambassador Logsdon further pledged unwavering support from the US in fostering an independent media landscape in Moldova. "The United States is committed to working alongside you, the journalists of Moldova, to strengthen the foundations of your democracy," he affirmed.
Underscoring Moldova's progress in safeguarding press freedoms, President Maia Sandu lauded the country's improved ranking in the World Press Freedom Index. "Our ascent to the 28th position is a testament to our collective efforts in protecting media independence," she remarked. "Yet, we must not rest on our laurels; there is still room for improvement."
President Sandu urged continued collaboration among government, media, and civil society to cultivate a vibrant and responsible media environment in Moldova.
