Farmers' dialogue with government intensifies

Representatives of the Farmers' Force Association (Forța Fermierilor) have engaged in high-level discussions with Moldovan President Maia Sandu, Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture and Food Industry Chairman Alexandr Trubca, and officials from the National Bank of Moldova (BNM) to address pressing concerns regarding loan rescheduling and debt restructuring.

The association's president, Ion Plamadeala, highlighted the urgency of addressing farmers' financial challenges, stating, "We have met with the parliamentary committee and Mr. Trubca, and we hope that Mr. Grosu may also join us. In the afternoon, a meeting with the president is scheduled, but we do not have the exact time yet. If we have time, we will also visit the National Bank to discuss loan rescheduling without them being considered non-performing."

The association has put forward a proposal to the government to introduce a moratorium on debt repayment for all creditors, including the cancellation of bank penalties until October 31, 2024. Additionally, they have requested the allocation of over 1 billion lei from the National Fund for Agricultural Development to support micro, small, and medium-sized farmers in the upcoming year.

Agriculture Minister Vladimir Bolea has previously expressed reservations about the association's demands for a moratorium, citing legal complexities. However, the Farmers' Force Association remains steadfast in its pursuit of a solution that alleviates the financial burden on Moldova's farmers.

The ongoing dialogue between the farmers' representatives and government officials underscores the critical role of agriculture in Moldova's economy and the importance of finding common ground to support this vital sector.
