Nehammer: No fast track for Ukraine or Moldova in EU accession
Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer has urged a cautious and measured approach to the expansion of the European Union, including the ongoing applications of Ukraine and Moldova.
During a meeting with deputies from the committee on relations with the European Union of the Austrian Parliament, Nehammer stressed the need for fairness and consistency in the accession process. "There should be no preferential treatment for any candidate country, including Ukraine," he stated, emphasising the importance of ensuring a level playing field for all applicants, particularly Bosnia and Herzegovina, which are currently engaged in their own accession negotiations.
Nehammer further highlighted the need for internal reforms within the EU itself before considering further expansion. "For the Union to effectively integrate new members, it must first address its own internal challenges and strengthen its institutional framework," he explained.
While reiterating Austria's unwavering support for Ukraine and its sovereignty, Nehammer emphasised that this support should not come at the expense of the EU's established principles and procedures. He acknowledged the symbolic gesture of offering Ukraine and Moldova the perspective of eventual membership, but firmly rejected calls for an accelerated process, stating that "a thorough and rigorous evaluation of each candidate's readiness remains paramount."
Moldovan authorities have not yet issued a formal response to the Austrian Chancellor's statement. However, they have consistently expressed their unwavering commitment to fulfilling the necessary requirements for EU accession and have maintained a positive outlook regardless of external factors.
Nehammer's position on EU expansion adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing debate within the bloc. While several member states favour a swift accession for Ukraine, others, including Austria, advocate for a more cautious approach that prioritises internal reforms and a fair and transparent process for all applicants.
