Zelenski asks leaders to choose "between Brussels and Moscow"
In a video message, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told EU leaders that at the moment "determination is defined either in Brussels or in Moscow" and reminded them of their "already promised decision".
Ukraine has fulfilled its obligations set by the European Commission, said Zelenskiy, who insisted: "I believe that unity will prevail at this meeting of the European Council and that the European Union will confirm its strength and responsibility."
Zelenskiy told the 27 leaders that Putin could start the New Year "full of joy" and that he would be pleased to see aid to Ukraine blocked. Kiev is hoping to get more money at the EU winter summit in Brussels, as well as a political commitment to open accession negotiations with Ukraine.
Zelenskiy said the decision "is not about what the politicians need, but what the people need," both those fighting in Ukraine and those in the EU "who believe that Europe can avoid a return to the old days of endless useless misunderstandings between capitals".
Zelenskiy reminded EU leaders of the history of the conflict in Ukraine: "10 years ago in Ukraine, people mobilized under the flag of the European Union... I ask you one thing today: do not betray those people and their faith in Europe."
The 27 EU leaders must approve funding for Ukraine consisting of €17 billion in grants and €33 billion in loans, plus an additional €20 billion in military aid.
