Black Sea Strategy gains traction as US Congress approves bill

The US Congress cemented its commitment to the Black Sea region on Thursday, approving a bill within the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that mandates a comprehensive security and development strategy.

This new strategy will prioritise regional security, economic growth, and energy independence. Importantly, it tasks the US government with identifying opportunities for American foreign direct investment in the Black Sea nations.

Romanian President of the Senate, Nicolae Ciucă, lauded the bill's passage, calling it a "testament to the unwavering commitment of the United States, Romania's strategic partner, to the security and stability of the Black Sea region." Romania has been a vocal proponent of increased US engagement in the area, seeing it as vital for both regional stability and economic prosperity.

With both chambers of Congress approving the bill, it now awaits President Joe Biden's signature to become law.
