Corruption fight tops agenda as Moldova gears up for EU talks
Embracing a momentous decision by the European Council, Moldova today commenced preparations for its accession negotiations with the European Union.
Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu, meeting with the European Commission, unveiled an ambitious agenda that prioritises comprehensive justice reform and unwavering commitment to combating corruption.
"The months ahead will be characterised by intensive dialogue on the acquis communautaire, the body of EU law," Popescu declared. "We will diligently compare Moldovan legislation and practices with established European standards across all 35 accession chapters. The immediate focus will be on reforming the justice system, specifically by bolstering its capacity to combat corruption effectively."
The announcement comes on the heels of the European Council's groundbreaking decision on Thursday, which greenlighted accession talks for both Moldova and Ukraine. Georgia, meanwhile, secured candidate status.
Underlining the complexity of the journey ahead, Popescu outlined a multi-phased negotiation process. "Bridging the gap between Moldovan realities and EU norms will require sustained efforts," he acknowledged, emphasising the need for meticulous alignment with EU standards through a series of structured meetings and consultations.
