Morari charts Moldova's EU course: Screening phase next stop
In a historic move, the European Council formally initiated accession talks with the Republic of Moldova on Thursday, marking a substantial step towards the country's long-held ambition of EU membership.
This critical milestone follows the European Commission's favourable recommendation in November, recognizing Moldova's adherence to commitments made upon attaining candidate status in June 2022.
"This decision signifies a watershed moment for Moldova," declared Ambassador Daniela Morari, Head of Mission to the EU. "It serves as a powerful validation of our advancement on the European path and underscores our resolute commitment to integration within the bloc."
While the exact timeframe for accession remains undefined, the process ahead is now outlined. Negotiations will begin with a comprehensive "screening" phase, meticulously comparing Moldovan legislation with established EU standards. This initial stage will serve as a strategic roadmap, pinpointing areas requiring legislative alignment before substantive negotiations on individual chapters of EU law can commence.
"We are fully prepared for the rigorous journey ahead," affirmed Ambassador Morari. "Our unwavering dedication to achieving full EU membership remains our guiding principle."
Furthermore, the establishment of the Bureau for European Integration within Moldova's Ministry of Foreign Affairs underscores the nation's commitment to navigating the intricacies of the accession process. This dedicated body will oversee domestic efforts, meticulously coordinating working groups across all 35 negotiating chapters.
