Strategic shift: Sullivan and Dermer discuss Israel's new phase against Hamas
In a high-level meeting on Tuesday, Jake Sullivan, the US National Security Advisor, and Ron Dermer, Israel's Minister of Strategic Affairs, discussed Israel's transition to a "different phase" in its conflict with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, as reported by an American official, according to Agerpres.ro.
The conversation delved into "practical steps to improve the humanitarian situation and minimise harm to civilians," as well as "efforts" to facilitate the release of hostages still held by the Palestinian Islamist movement, Hamas.
Despite being a historic ally of Israel, the US increasingly urges more targeted operations, with President Joe Biden publicly expressing disagreements with the conservative government led by Benjamin Netanyahu.
As the Israeli military escalated deadly strikes in the Gaza Strip, Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi stated that the war would last "many more months."
Officials also discussed the need "to prepare for the day after, including governance and security issues in Gaza, a political horizon for Palestinians, and continued normalisation efforts," according to a White House official.
