Moldova boosts cancer care & doctor pay in healthcare revamp
The Moldovan Ministry of Health has unveiled significant progress in bolstering the nation's healthcare system throughout 2023.
Minister Ala Nemerenco outlined a series of key achievements, highlighting enhanced access to care, infrastructure upgrades, and advancements in medical technology.
Prioritising Critical Concerns:
- Stroke Centers: Recognizing stroke as a leading cause of death and disability, Moldova established 13 dedicated stroke centres, ensuring swift and specialised care for patients.
- Power Resilience: All hospitals were equipped with backup generators, minimising disruptions and safeguarding patient well-being during power outages.
Modernization for Enhanced Care:
- Medical Equipment: Hospitals and medical institutions received CT scanners and other cutting-edge equipment, empowering enhanced diagnostic capabilities and treatment options. "Equipping facilities with modern tools is crucial for motivating medical personnel," stated Minister Nemerenco. "We've invested $2.4 million in fortifying nine perinatal centres with upgraded surgical rooms, delivery areas, and intensive care units."
Expanding Access to Medication:
- Increased Affordability: Expenditures from the mandatory health insurance fund surged by 20% compared to 2022, directly impacting patient affordability of essential medications and devices.
Investing in the Future:
- Infrastructure and Equipment: An estimated 950 million lei (approximately $40 million) was allocated to improve medical infrastructure and equipment.
2024 Priorities:
- Intensive Care Expansion: Eleven new intensive care units will be established in major hospitals, bolstering critical care capacity.
- Rural Healthcare Access: 150 subsidised pharmacies will be launched in rural areas, addressing the geographic disparity in access to essential medications. Currently, only 418 of the country's 1,540 pharmacies are located in rural areas.
- Cancer Care: Over 2,500 women with breast cancer will receive free, direct access to two vital medications from local pharmacies, eliminating the need for travel to the Oncology Institute in Chisinau.
- Supporting Medical Professionals: Doctors' salaries will increase by 15% at the beginning of 2024, recognizing their pivotal role in the healthcare system.
Unwavering Commitment:
Minister Nemerenco reiterated the ministry's unwavering dedication to ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare for all Moldovan citizens. The implemented initiatives and planned future endeavours underscore Moldova's commitment to building a robust and accessible healthcare system for its citizens.
