Moldova's 4D strategy secures EU talks launch in 2024

Moldova's unwavering commitment to European integration bore fruit in 2023, culminating in the European Council's historic decision to launch accession negotiations.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration (MFAEI) unveiled a report on December 28th, detailing the nation's multifaceted efforts spearheaded by the "4D principles: European Development, Dialogue, Economic Diplomacy, and Diaspora."

Defence stood as a pillar of progress, with Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu highlighting, "The European Peace Facility's €40 million grant significantly bolstered our capabilities." Closer economic ties materialised through the landmark agreement slashing roaming fees between Moldovan and EU operators.

Moldova's diplomatic acumen manifested in hosting the prestigious second European Political Community Summit in June, gathering 48 heads of state and government alongside prominent European figures. Regional collaboration was equally robust, with the second trilateral ministerial meeting bringing Moldova, Romania, and Ukraine closer.

Emphasising the 4D framework, Popescu affirmed, "Our online appointment platform for the diaspora, now operational in 32 missions, exemplifies our commitment." Consular staff increases in key embassies and the establishment of Moldova's embassy in India further demonstrated this dedication.

Economic strides included the signing of a trade liberalisation agreement with the EFTA nations and the identification of new markets for Moldovan products in India and Sweden. 2023 also witnessed a flurry of diplomatic activity, with 21 foreign ministers, a majority from EU member states, visiting Chisinau. Popescu himself undertook 26 foreign trips, ten to Brussels.

Looking ahead, the MFAEI report declared, "2024 will be marked by the launch of accession negotiations, propelling Moldova closer to the EU." The ministry also announced the establishment of a dedicated Office for Integration.
