Moldova braces for biting Siberian blast
Brace yourselves, Moldova: a blast of Siberian air is set to arrive on January 7, ushering in a wave of wintry weather.
Get ready for frosty temperatures, swirling snow, and potentially slick roads, warns the State Hydrometeorological Service.
“We’ll see a significant intrusion of polar air through January 11th,” confirms spokesperson Ghenadie Roșca, “dramatically dropping temperatures.” Adding to the wintry mix, a southern cyclone arrives on January 8-9, bringing “gloomy weather initially, with rain. But as the polar air dives in, expect that rain to transition to sleet and snow.”
The agency is closely monitoring the situation and may issue a weather warning for January 7-9 if conditions become particularly harsh.
This frigid front isn’t isolated to Moldova. Romania expects similar lows, with Digi24.ro reporting potential sleet and snow next week. Across Eastern Europe, the mercury is set to plummet, with the northern half of Moldova, eastern Transylvania, and the intra-Carpathian regions potentially experiencing lows below -15°C.
Further north, Scandinavia is already grappling with the consequences of extreme cold and snowstorms, disrupting travel and schools. Meanwhile, powerful winds and heavy rains are causing havoc in Western Europe, with The Guardian reporting flooding and a fatality.
Even Russia isn’t spared, with the cold air mass pushing temperatures in Moscow and other areas down to a bone-chilling -30°C, far below January averages.
Stay tuned for further updates and advisories as this biting blast of winter makes its way across the region.
