Hospital mask mandates: US States take action amid virus rise
Hospitals in four US states are requiring masks once more, citing a concerning upward trend in COVID-19 cases, seasonal flu, and other respiratory illnesses.
This move marks a shift in policy for facilities in New York, California, Illinois, and Massachusetts, where mask mandates had previously been lifted.
Dr. Ashwin Vasan, New York's Health Commissioner, told media outlets that the mask mandate would be reinstated in all 11 public hospitals, 30 health centres, and five long-term care facilities across the city. This decision comes as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports a 16% increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations compared to the previous week, with over 29,000 cases recorded in the week ending December 23rd. Additionally, the CDC reported over 14,700 flu hospitalizations during the same period.
The return of mask mandates in hospitals reignites a debate that has been a fixture of the COVID-19 pandemic. While some view them as necessary to protect healthcare workers and vulnerable patients, others oppose them on various grounds, including personal liberty and the perceived effectiveness of masks in limiting viral spread.
The Supreme Court, dominated by conservative justices, previously struck down President Biden's federal order requiring vaccinations and testing for businesses. Similarly, a judge appointed by former President Trump overturned the Biden administration's mask mandate for public transportation.
Meanwhile, those who have consistently worn masks throughout the pandemic express frustration and concern about the potential health risks posed by those who choose not to do so.
The current resurgence of respiratory illnesses underscores the ongoing threat posed by COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. With the holiday season behind us and colder weather arriving, public health officials remain vigilant in their efforts to contain the spread of these viruses.
It remains to be seen whether the reinstated mask mandates will be effective in curbing the rise in hospitalizations. However, this move highlights the continued importance of taking precautions to protect ourselves and others, especially in high-risk settings like hospitals.
