Moldova gears up for blizzard, emergency centre on standby
The Republic of Moldova is preparing for a potential blizzard over the weekend, prompting the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) to activate its Emergency Management Center (EMC) if necessary.
Heavy snowfall, strong winds, and potential power outages are expected across the country from January 7-10, with the northern and eastern regions forecast to receive the brunt of the storm, accumulating up to 50 centimetres of snow. Gusts exceeding 100 kilometres per hour are also possible.
"The working group will meet and take action to address the situation in the country as soon as the unfavourable weather conditions set in," stated the Ministry of Internal Affairs in a press release.
The MAI urges the public to prioritise safety:
- Follow official weather warnings and advisories.
- Stay updated on road conditions and travel advisories issued by the police and the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations.
- Drive cautiously, adapting speed to the conditions and ensuring vehicles are properly equipped for winter weather.
- Consider avoiding unnecessary travel if possible.
The national road authority, the State Administration of Roads, also issued a warning for drivers, stressing the importance of:
- Driving with caution and extra vigilance.
- Adjusting speed according to road conditions, which may be slippery and treacherous.
- Ensuring vehicles are equipped with winter tires and proper lighting.
- Checking traffic reports and weather updates before embarking on any journeys.
Moldovans are familiar with winter weather, but the anticipated severity of this snowfall warrants caution and preparedness. The proactive measures taken by the authorities aim to ensure public safety and minimise disruptions should the storm materialise as predicted.
