One pillar of Estonia's success is unwavering judicial independence. "Appointments have been completely depoliticised," former Estonian ambassador Victor Guzun emphasises, highlighting the complete depoliticization of judicial appointments. This shields decisions from external influence, upholding fairness and impartiality.
Beyond personnel, legal frameworks were revamped. Every Soviet-era law was meticulously reviewed and aligned with contemporary democratic ideals. The result? A more equitable and just legal landscape, reflected in updated civil and criminal codes.
Transparency also plays a crucial role. Public trust thrives on readily accessible information, and Estonia delivers. Court decisions are readily available, fostering accountability within the justice system. "The transformation of the judicial system has ensured public access to court decisions," Guzun notes, underlining the public's access to judicial rulings.
