Transnistria blames Ukraine, Moldova doubts terror plot claims
Tensions simmer further in the breakaway region of Transnistria as its self-proclaimed authorities levelled accusations against Ukraine.
They allege that 60 individuals trained in Ukraine are plotting terrorist attacks in Transnistria, targeting critical infrastructure, military facilities, and high-ranking officials.
"The so-called Ministry of Security in Tiraspol claimed this, prompting swift scepticism from officials in Chisinau," reported Radio Moldova. Mariana Sarî, a senior consultant at the Reintegration Policy Bureau, dismissed the allegations as "provocative information with a propagandistic purpose."
"We urge everyone to prioritise information from official public sources, disseminated by the constitutional authorities," Sarî emphasised.
This incident marks the latest development in a series of unconfirmed claims from Transnistria. Earlier this week, they reported a purported armed incident near the Moldova-Ukraine border, claiming two local residents were abducted by Ukrainian forces. Neither Moldova nor Ukraine acknowledged this event.
The heightened tensions come amid heightened regional anxieties due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The Moldovan government has repeatedly called for calm and urged all parties to prioritise dialogue and de-escalation.
