Blizzard blitz: Europe grapples with record cold & snow
A cold snap has gripped northern France, bringing record-breaking temperatures for this time of year. In Spain, the army was called in to help rescue hundreds of drivers who were stranded on an icy highway.
In France, temperatures plummeted to minus 15 degrees Celsius in some parts of the Pas-de-Calais region. In other parts of the country, temperatures have remained below freezing for two weeks.
Despite the cold, some people have taken advantage of the snow to go sledding and snowboarding. However, drivers have faced challenging conditions on icy roads. Snow and black ice have caused problems for motorists, especially truck drivers. Trucks have been unable to move, and traffic jams have formed on highways. In some cities, public transportation has been suspended.
In Spain, the army was called in to help rescue 600 drivers who were stranded on an icy highway in the north of the country. Temperatures there have dropped to minus 13 degrees Celsius.
