Ex-bank president jailed for $100 million embezzlement
A Moldovan court sentenced today former Savings Bank interim president Viorel Bârca to 10 years in prison for embezzling $100 million, the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (PAC) announced.
Bârca was found guilty of falsifying financial transfers (SWIFT orders) during 2013-2014, diverting funds to accounts controlled by a criminal organisation. He maintained his innocence throughout the three-year trial.
The Judgment also demanded full restitution of the stolen funds to the now-liquidated Savings Bank, once the country's largest financial institution. Additionally, half of Bârca's assets, valued at approximately $4 million, were ordered seized.
