Moldova eyes 2024 with caution amid Russian meddling concerns

Moldovan authorities anticipate an increase in Russian attempts to destabilise the country in 2024, a year marked by presidential elections and a potential referendum on EU membership.

Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Andrei Spînu warned in an interview with Adevărul that Russia might resort to "financing protests and other actions" to hinder Moldova's European aspirations.

"The Kremlin's goal has always been to maintain geopolitical influence over Moldova," Spînu stated. "They will likely continue using various methods, including pseudo-European political parties, to destabilise the situation and derail our European path."

Spînu emphasised that these efforts are expected to intensify as the election and referendum dates approach. "It's evident that Russia will try to stir up trouble the closer we get to these key events," he said.

Similar concerns were voiced earlier by the Moldovan Intelligence and Security Service (SIS). They predicted increased protest activity in 2024-2025, targeting reforms, elections, and particularly the EU accession process. The SIS also reported potential disinformation campaigns aimed at destabilising Moldovan society and regional security.

These warnings suggest that Moldova may face challenges from Russia in its pursuit of closer ties with the European Union. The government has expressed its commitment to democratic processes and European integration, while remaining cautious of potential external interference.
