Moldova's EU dream: BNM governor urges seizing "unique moment"
The start of negotiations for European Union membership presents a "unique moment" for Moldova, one the country cannot afford to miss, according to National Bank of Moldova (BNM) Governor Anca Dragu.
Dragu, who boasts experience in European institutions and the IMF, highlighted her qualifications for this "critical juncture" in a "About Money" podcast interview. "I understand the accession process intimately," she declared, emphasising the "enormous satisfaction" that awaits upon successful membership.
She identified EU membership as a guarantor of "peace, security, democracy, and prosperity" for Moldova, underlining its crucial role in the current geopolitical climate. Drawing a parallel with Romania's experience, Dragu stressed the stark difference between being inside and outside the bloc.
Experience as Leverage
Dragu believes her background positions her well to guide Moldova through this crucial phase. "My experience in the accession process, Brussels, and the IMF equips me for this moment," she asserted. This includes understanding negotiation mechanisms, key players, and pressure management strategies, all of which she considers "a big plus."
Independence Seen as an Advantage
Furthermore, Dragu views her lack of family ties in Moldova, often referred to as the "land of godparents," as an asset. "It gives me a kind of equal distance from everyone," she explained, suggesting an impartiality that could be beneficial in navigating negotiations.
Background
Anca Dragu was appointed BNM Governor in December 2023, bringing over 15 years of experience from the National Bank of Romania and the IMF. She also held positions within the European Commission and Romania's government.
