US Targets Houthi Missiles in Red Sea Operation
The United States military conducted strikes on Thursday in Yemen, targeting four surface drones and seven cruise missiles "identified as prepared for launch against ships in the Red Sea" by Houthi rebels, according to the US Central Command, as reported by Agerpres.
The military stated on social media that these drones and missiles "posed an imminent threat" as they were located in "Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen."
Since November, the Houthi rebels have launched attacks on vessels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, claiming to target ships they suspect of having links to Israel in "solidarity" with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. These attacks, amidst the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, have disrupted maritime trade, forcing many shipowners to suspend passage through the vital Red Sea route, which carries roughly 12% of global trade.
In response to these attacks and to protect maritime traffic, the US, which recently redesignated the Houthis as a "terrorist" entity, established a multinational coalition in December.
