Bălți Considers Public Transport Fare Hike, Residents Push Back
The Bălți City Council is proposing a fare increase for public transportation, sparking discontent among residents who fear the financial burden.
While the final decision awaits public consultations, the debate highlights the challenges of balancing municipal finances with passenger affordability.
Proposed Hike Sparks Controversy:
Former mayor Nicolae Grigorișin cited expert recommendations for an 8 lei fare, emphasizing the inherent unprofitability of municipal transport and the need to bridge the funding gap. However, current mayor Alexandr Petkov assured residents the increase wouldn't reach 8 lei, promoting the use of cost-effective passes alongside the fare adjustment.
Residents Voice Concerns:
Bălți residents expressed strong opposition to the potential hike, citing financial constraints and the prospect of resorting to walking as an alternative. One resident lamented, "Imagine affording transport, food, and bills with a 5,000 lei salary. Eight lei is beyond the pale!" Others echoed similar concerns, highlighting the financial strain on low-income residents.
Public Consultations to Decide Fate:
To gauge public opinion and gather feedback, the City Council will hold public consultations from February 27 to March 7. The current fare stands at 4 lei, and the final decision on any increase will hinge on the outcome of these consultations and further deliberations.
