Moldova to Bolster Cybersecurity with Two New Agencies
In response to the growing threat of cyberattacks, Moldova is establishing two new institutions: the Cybersecurity Agency and the Cybercor National Institute for Cybersecurity Innovation.
The move aims to strengthen the country's resilience against cyber threats and ensure a more secure digital environment.
The need for enhanced cybersecurity has become increasingly evident with the digitalization of government services and institutions, the rising use of online banking, and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Building Resilience Through Collaboration
Mihai Popșoi, Moldova's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasised the importance of collaboration in building cyber resilience. He highlighted that around 20% of cyberattacks target public authorities, underscoring the need for proactive measures.
The new Cybersecurity Agency will work closely with intelligence services, national authorities, and international organisations to combat cybercrime. The agency's future director, Mihai Lupașcu, outlined plans to secure critical infrastructure, identify and assess service providers' security levels, and implement preventive measures.
Investing in Education and Innovation
The Cybercor National Institute for Cybersecurity Innovation will focus on education and research in the field of cybersecurity. It will offer training to students, academics, and other stakeholders, and will conduct research to support Moldova's economic development and innovation.
U.S. Support for Moldova's Cybersecurity Efforts
The United States has provided significant financial support for the establishment of the two new institutions. The U.S. government has allocated $1.2 million for the Cybersecurity Agency and $1.4 million for the Cybercor Institute.
John Riordan, Deputy Director of the USAID Mission in Moldova, highlighted the importance of technical assistance in helping Moldova respond to cyberattacks. He emphasised that Cybercor will provide training, host laboratories, and conduct research to support Moldova's cybersecurity goals.
Moldova Cybersecurity Forum 2024
The need for enhanced cybersecurity was a key topic at the Moldova Cybersecurity Forum 2024, held in Chișinău on February 9, 2024. The event brought together over 500 experts, officials, and other stakeholders to discuss the latest trends and challenges in cybersecurity.
Increased Cyber Attacks in 2022
The establishment of the two new institutions comes in the wake of a significant increase in cyberattacks against Moldova in 2022. According to authorities, several information systems, platforms, and public portals were compromised. In August 2022, over 80 government websites were targeted by cyberattacks originating from outside the country.
The creation of the Cybersecurity Agency and the Cybercor Institute represents a significant step forward in Moldova's efforts to bolster its cybersecurity and protect its digital infrastructure. By investing in education, research, and international collaboration, Moldova is building a more resilient and secure digital future.
