Moldova Farmers Unconvinced Despite Government Aid Disbursement

Moldovan farmers remain dissatisfied despite government efforts to address their concerns following November 2023 protests.

The government commission tasked with analysing farmers' demands has concluded its work, according to Vasile Șarban, State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture.

"The Agency for Intervention and Payments in Agriculture (AIPA) disbursed 252 million lei to farmers in January," Șarban reported, highlighting the government's support. However, farmers interviewed by Radio Moldova expressed discontent. "We haven't seen any real impact from the commission," one farmer stated.

The commission analysed financial difficulties faced by farms and sought debt rescheduling solutions with creditors. Additionally, Șarban emphasised the ongoing 70% subsidy on insurance premiums.

Despite these measures, farmers in southern Moldova continue protesting since February 7th. They lack resources for spring work, citing limited access to credit, diesel, and fertilisers. "Protests will continue until the state offers real help," declared a protestor.

This follows November 2023 protests where the government identified farmers at risk and promised state compensation. Additionally, Romania pledged diesel fuel, expected to arrive by January's end, but authorities haven't confirmed its arrival. Over 1,400 farmers were to benefit.
