Moldova Set to Join EU Energy Market Before Full Membership
Moldova is poised to integrate into the European Union's (EU) energy market ahead of full bloc membership, according to Energy Minister Victor Parlicov.
This announcement, made on Radio Moldova's "Spațiul Public" (Public Space) program, highlights the country's progress in energy sector reforms and its commitment to closer ties with the EU.
Timeline and Benefits:
Parlicov expressed confidence in Moldova's integration by 2028-2029, stating, "We continue to move at the pace we have set. I am sure that we will become part of the EU's common energy market." This move promises several advantages for Moldovan consumers, including:
- Choice of suppliers: "Consumers will have the opportunity to choose suppliers," Parlicov emphasised.
- Increased competition: A more competitive market is expected to drive innovation and potentially lower prices.
- Improved security of supply: Integration with the EU grid could enhance Moldova's energy security.
- Decarbonization: Joining the EU market aligns with Moldova's clean energy goals.
EU Support and Recognition:
The EU has actively supported Moldova's energy reforms. The recent fifth High-Level Dialogue between the EU and Moldova on energy, held in Chișinău, resulted in a signed roadmap for further market reforms. EU Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, commended Moldova's progress, stating, "The roadmap will support Moldova in strengthening its energy resilience and transitioning to a cleaner energy future."
