Belarus Elections: Lukashenko Announces 2025 Re-election Bid
Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko has announced he will run for re-election in 2025, according to the state-run BelTA news agency, quoted by Reuters.
"Tell them (the exiled opposition) that I will run," Lukashenko told reporters after casting his ballot in Sunday's parliamentary and local council elections. "A responsible president would never abandon the people who supported him," he added.
Sunday's elections are the first in Belarus since a wave of political crackdowns began three and a half years ago, following widespread protests against Lukashenko's disputed re-election victory.
Lukashenko, 69, has ruled Belarus since 1994 and is a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
