Russia is preparing a new offensive against Ukraine in late May or early summer, but Kyiv has a clear counterstrategy, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sunday.

Speaking a day after the second anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Ukrainian president stressed the importance of continued unity between Kyiv and its Western allies. He emphasised that Ukraine's victory relies on ongoing Western support, according to Reuters.

"We will prepare for their assault. Their assault which began on October 8 has not brought any results, I believe. We, for our part, will prepare our plan and will follow it," Zelenskyy told reporters in Kyiv.

After two years of war, Moscow's troops are dug in along a 960-km (600-mile) front line in eastern and southern Ukraine. The situation for Ukraine is worsening due to a shortage of artillery shells and the need for longer-range missiles, as well as a lack of fresh troops.

Zelenskyy said he was confident that the U.S. Congress would approve a new major package of military and financial assistance and that Ukraine needed this decision within a month.
