Stop Sugar, Move More: Moldova Fights Obesity
Around 64 percent of Moldovan citizens are overweight, and over 22% suffer from obesity, with men being the most affected, according to data from the National Agency for Public Health.
The rate of overweight adolescents has also increased by four percent in recent years. Health experts say the lack of physical activity and increased sugar consumption are key factors behind this rise in weight problems.
The good news is that Moldova is taking steps to combat this growing public health concern. Specialists emphasise the importance of healthy eating habits, including avoiding sugary drinks and excessive salt. They also recommend low-calorie diets that provide all the necessary nutrients, along with a focus on incorporating fruits and vegetables into children's diets.
Leading the charge at the local level is Chisinau's Municipal Department of Health and Social Services. They recently launched an information and awareness campaign to promote healthy lifestyles. This campaign includes organising free outdoor exercise programs, a response to public demand for continued access to these activities.
Moldova's fight against obesity reflects a global challenge. The World Health Organization recognizes obesity as a chronic disease requiring long-term management. Over 1 billion people worldwide are obese, and estimates suggest this number will continue to rise dramatically by 2035. The economic impact of overweight and obesity is also staggering, reaching an estimated $4.32 trillion globally.
World Obesity Day, celebrated today, serves as a reminder of the importance of promoting healthy habits from a young age. By encouraging people to "Stop Sugar, Move More," Moldova and communities worldwide can make significant strides in winning the battle against obesity.
