Communist and Socialist Bloc Challenges Postal Voting Law
The deputies from the Communist and Socialist Bloc (CSB) are set to challenge the draft law on postal voting at the Constitutional Court, as announced today by CSB President Vlad Batrîncea.
According to Batrîncea, the legislative initiative was not consulted on and should be removed from the parliamentary agenda.
"We will challenge this project if it is voted on in the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova and brought to the Constitutional Court and international organisations. However, we believe that there is still room and time for the parliamentary majority to withdraw this project from the parliamentary agenda because it constitutes another illegality that could jeopardise the validation of this presidential election," stated Vlad Batrîncea.
Postal voting has been requested by citizens from the diaspora, who are compelled to travel long distances to reach polling stations, said Head of State Maia Sandu. She emphasised that all citizens have the right to vote, and the initiative for postal voting aims to partially or fully address this issue.
It is worth mentioning that last week, a group of MPs from the Party of Action and Solidarity registered a legislative initiative in Parliament regarding postal voting. Initially, this will be tested in Canada and the United States of America, countries where postal voting is implemented, and Moldovans residing there are familiar with this procedure.
