Poland Seeks US Help with Nuclear Power Goals
On Tuesday, Polish President Andrzej Duda told reporters that Polish and American leaders discussed the development of cooperation in the field of nuclear energy. The discussion took place during a meeting between a delegation led by Duda and Prime Minister Donald Tusk and US President Joe Biden, Hotnews reports.
Poland plans to invest in nuclear energy to reduce its carbon emissions and phase out coal. The previous Law and Justice Party (PiS) government had selected Westinghouse Electric Co as the technology provider. Westinghouse Electric Co later partnered with Bechtel, the largest American engineering firm.
The Tusk cabinet has confirmed that Poland needs nuclear energy but has indicated it will conduct an audit of the project started by its predecessors.
"Tomorrow I will travel to Georgia, where I will visit the most modern American nuclear power plant," Duda said. "A very similar one will be built ... in our country. We also talked about this today ... about the development of this cooperation when it comes to conventional nuclear energy and climate protection."
Warsaw had planned to build its first nuclear power plant on the Baltic coast by 2033, but is now assessing whether the project can be completed on time, given the delays it suffered under the previous government.
