Moldova Parliament to Form SIS Oversight Committee
The National Security, Defense, and Public Order Committee of the Parliament of Moldova has discussed the formation of a committee to monitor the activities of the Security and Intelligence Service (SIS).
According to a press release from the Parliament, the proposed committee would have seven members: three members of the National Security, Defense, and Public Order Committee; two members of the Legal Committee, Appointments, and Immunities; and two members of the Human Rights and Interethnic Relations Committee. The possibility of including a representative of civil society without voting rights is also under consideration.
Participants in the meeting agreed to create a working group to draft the rules of procedure for the SIS monitoring committee.
"Our goal is to create a working group that includes representatives of each committee, as well as representatives of the institution that monitors the activities of the SIS, including from civil society. We need to amend the legislation and move to a new stage. As it exists today, the control subcommittee of the National Security, Defense, and Public Order Committee is not effective," stressed Lilian Carp, the chair of the National Security, Defense, and Public Order Committee.
Currently, a three-member subcommittee within the National Security, Defense, and Public Order Committee monitors the activities of the SIS.
