Advocating Inclusion: Moldovan President's Message on Down Syndrome

World Down Syndrome Day is observed on March 21st. In this context, the President of the Republic of Moldova has articulated her aspiration for a future where the diagnosis of Down syndrome ceases to be perceived as punitive but rather as an opportunity for assistance.

"I envision a collective journey towards a time when this diagnosis no longer carries a negative connotation. I advocate for collective efforts to extend assistance, instead of perpetuating stereotypes and segregation. Hence, I have opted to allocate the 'Timișoara for European Values' award to an organisation dedicated to fostering the inclusion of children with Down syndrome," stated the head of state.

The President implored citizens to endorse organisations such as "Prietena Mea," (She is My Friend) established by Ludmila Adamciuc, alongside other entities supporting these children.

"Let us draw inspiration from the benevolence exhibited by individuals with Down syndrome, supporting their pursuits and nurturing their aspirations. I urge parents to engage their children in discussions about friendship and non-discrimination – an avenue through which our nation evolves," wrote Maia Sandu.

Simultaneously, the head of state underscored the significance of education in combating discrimination and cultivating friendships. She advocated for the transformation of schools into inclusive environments, wherein all children have the opportunity to form friendships and access knowledge – acknowledging differences while ensuring equality. "I implore all to collectively strive for improvement," concluded the head of state.

It is noteworthy that in February, President Maia Sandu donated the "Timișoara for European Values" award to the organisation "She is My Friend".
