Moldovan President Criticises Gagauz Leader's Alleged Support for Russian Invasion

In an interview with the publication "Nokta," President Maia Sandu asserted that the recent visits of Gagauz leader, Evghenia Guțul, to the Russian Federation indicate support for the Russian invasion in Ukraine.

Sandu emphasised that maintaining peace stands as a paramount concern for the authorities in Chișinău.

Sandu expressed bewilderment at the inability of some individuals to discern between peace and war. She reiterated Moldova's commitment to peace and condemned those initiating violence against civilians. Sandu questioned the rationale of individuals from Comrat who normalise war, emphasising her lack of comprehension towards such viewpoints.

Evghenia Guțul's recent activities, including a signed agreement with a Russian bank in Moscow, further highlight her engagements in the financial and credit sector. Guțul's prior meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in March underscores her diplomatic interactions in the region.

Allegations against Guțul regarding budget restrictions, rights violations, and exacerbation of instability in Gagauzia and beyond were also discussed. These allegations coincided with purported agreements with Russian entities, such as Gazprom, to supply gas at reduced prices to the Gagauz region.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean expressed concerns over false promises made by what he referred to as a criminal group, emphasising the need for legal action in accordance with the Penal Code.

Interim Prosecutor General Ion Munteanu disclosed plans to prosecute Guțul based on accumulating evidence of her involvement in criminal activities.

Notably, President Maia Sandu's refusal to appoint Guțul to the government underscores her stance against affiliations with criminal entities, reaffirming her commitment to upholding legal standards and order within the Republic of Moldova.
